GRIHA: All you need to know about this green rating in India

What is GRIHA?

GRIHA or Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment qualifies the performance of an ecological home in energy consumption, waste management and management of renewable energy resources.

Eligibility to request a GRIHA certificate

Any building in the design stage and covering more than 2,500 square meters can apply for a GRIHA certificate. These buildings include residential buildings, office spaces, institutions, hotels, shopping complexes, hospitals, etc., but exclude any industrial units such as factories and plants.

GRIHA Certificate Application Process

First, you must register your property on the GRIHA website by completing the online registration form. Check in at the pre-design stage to clear up any construction issues.

Next, you must submit hard copies of the documents related to the criteria. The final step is the evaluation, which is carried out by the Association for the Development and Research of Social Habitats (ADaRSH).

How GRIHA certified a building

Under the GRIHA system, the ADaRSH team assesses green housing in India based on 34 criteria and rates them on a scale of 1 to 100. The 34 criteria are divided into four sections, each dealing with a particular aspect of the construction of an ecological house. Each criterion has a number of points assigned for scoring purposes.

1. Website Planning

GRIHA rates green houses based on the various phases of site planning. This includes site selection, landscape preservation, soil conservation, minimization of air pollution, provision of adequate sanitary facilities for construction workers, etc. There are 24 points assigned for this section.

two. Building planning and construction stage

The stage of planning and construction of the building is the most important criterion. This includes regulation of water use and quality, optimization of energy demand and building performance, implementation of renewable energy systems, proper waste management system using environmentally friendly building materials, etc. . GRIHA has assigned a total of 68 points for this section.

3. Building Operation and Maintenance

This phase has only 8 points and includes the preparation of the energy audit report and the protocol for the operation and maintenance of the building’s infrastructure.

Four. Innovation

The final criterion is innovation. Four extra points are assigned to this section. A green house can get these bonus points if it can implement new and innovative ideas on alternative modes of transportation, environmental education, etc.

GRIHA star ratings for green homes

An ecological house must have a minimum of 50 points to obtain the GRIHA certification. A home is given a particular star rating based on the number of points it earns.
