Gym lighting requirements you should know
There are precise lighting requirements for gyms where people participate in sports activities such as volleyball, basketball, and gymnastics, so that players can see clearly and be safe while playing. Typically, the types of lights used will be determined by the size of the gym.
Single court designs
On single gym or basketball floors, the lights will be installed in the ceiling and spaced evenly in rows. The size of the gym will determine the number of fixtures to be installed. A small gym with only 5 feet around each basket and sideline can be appropriately lit with 8 lighting fixtures that are evenly spaced along the ceiling. On the other hand, if the gym is very large, it will require more lights to cover the dark spots as well. About 24 evenly spaced lighting lights can be hung over a large gym court and should be mounted 22 feet above the gym floor.
Double and triple court designs
Some gyms have two basketball courts next to each other, while others have a third, larger court that runs perpendicular across others. Gym floors like this are apparently very large and require lighting commensurate with their size. The total number of lights that can be used ranges from 36 to 64, depending on the amount of area surrounding the pitch. They are usually hung 22 feet above the ground and are evenly spaced in rows along the ceiling.
Twin lights are used on basketball courts and gyms because they are more beneficial than single light fixtures. They consume less electricity over time, are more efficient, are intensely bright, often have a longer lifespan, and create a softer glow on the gym floor. However, they are ideal for smaller gyms and can be hung in two rows above the court in groups of 12, but they do not need to be evenly spaced. They can be hung where needed along the gym ceiling so they can illuminate any dark spots that may be present. They should also be hung about 22 feet above the ground in accordance with acceptable standards.
The lighting of a gym must be done correctly so that the games that are played in it are enjoyed to the fullest. Consequently, it is important to have adequate lighting in addition to other requirements that will make the gym standard.
