How to get rid of swollen lymph nodes with home remedies

The most common cause of swollen glands is an infection, which can be caused by bacteria, a virus, or even a fungus. Generally, when lymph nodes become swollen and inflamed, based on the location of the node, it is possible to guess what is causing the swelling. For example, when a person complains of swollen lymph nodes in the neck region, it is most likely due to a cold, respiratory tract infection, mumps, measles, or an abscess in the mouth. Similarly, if the lymph nodes in the groin are swollen, it could be due to an ingrown toenail or foot infection. Infection in the arms or hands will lead to enlarged lymph nodes in the armpits.

However, there are certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus that can cause swollen lymph nodes anywhere in the body. Even certain types of cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma, can cause enlarged lymph nodes anywhere in the body.

Generally, when the nodes are enlarged and swollen, it is best to visit a doctor for the necessary diagnosis and treatment. However, along with your doctor-prescribed treatment, you can also try some home remedies to ease pain and discomfort. Some of the home remedies that are helpful in getting rid of swollen lymph nodes are highlighted below.

Hot and cold compress: If the site is tender, it can be soothed with the help of a cold and hot compress. Take a bowl of warm water and one of ice water. First soak a washcloth in warm water and place it on the affected site for about ten minutes. Then use another cloth dipped in cold water and place it in the same place for another ten minutes. Use this home remedy every hour to relieve pain and discomfort.

Massage – Massaging the affected site is believed to help reduce inflammation to some extent. The nodes tend to swell when they are blocked. Therefore, a gentle massage can help clear the blockage and release the contents of the node. This, in turn, allows the inflammation to subside.

Honey: Honey has been used for centuries for its healing properties. It is believed that consuming honey can help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Dissolve a teaspoon of natural honey in a glass of warm water. Alternatively, you can add honey to some tea. Make sure no sugar is added to the tea. Drinking warm water with honey or tea with honey can help eliminate swelling.
